What is Radon

Radon is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless radioactive gas that comes from the natural breakdown of uranium in soil, water, and rock, and gets into the air you breathe. You can be exposed to this gas anywhere, but your greatest risk of exposure is in your home, where you spend the majority of your time. Radon can enter homes or businesses through cracks and gaps in the foundation. The EPA estimates that Radon is responsible for approximately 21,000 lung cancer deaths each year in the United States alone. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer after cigarette smoking. The risk is even higher for smokers exposed to Radon. When Radon gas decays, it produces tiny radioactive particles, when inhaled, these particles get trapped in your lungs. As they continue to break down, they release small burst of energy that can damage lung tissue. Over time, this damage can lead to lung cancer.
